Top Teacher Interview Questions & Answers

Teaching interviews are highly scenario-based. Principals want to see your classroom management philosophy in action, your ability to differentiate instruction, and your commitment to student outcomes.

1Classroom & Instruction

Q

How do you differentiate instruction for diverse learners?

A

I use pre-assessment data to form flexible small groups, vary content delivery (direct instruction, visual models, hands-on tasks), and adjust complexity with tiered assignments. For ELL students, I use visual supports and partner work. For students with IEPs, I consult with the special education team and adapt materials to meet each student's specific accommodations.

Q

Walk me through a lesson you are proud of.

A

Describe the learning objective, how you engaged students at the start, the instructional strategy you used (direct instruction, workshop model, project-based), a moment where you adjusted based on student response, and the evidence of learning at the end. Be specific about the grade level, subject, and one student interaction that showed the lesson landed.

Q

How do you handle a student who is disruptive in class?

A

I first use low-key interventions: proximity, eye contact, a quiet private redirect. If behavior continues, I check in one-on-one during a transition — often there is an underlying issue. I contact parents early before problems escalate. For chronic disruption, I collaborate with the counselor and administration and document interventions. I avoid public power struggles.

Q

How do you use data to inform your instruction?

A

I use formative assessment data (exit tickets, quick checks, observation) weekly to identify students who have not yet mastered a concept and to group students for small-group instruction. I use benchmark and summative data quarterly to evaluate program effectiveness and adjust my pacing and approach for the next unit.

2Behavioral

Q

Tell me about a student you struggled to reach. What did you do?

A

Be specific. Describe what made the student difficult to engage, the strategies you tried (building relationship, parent contact, referral to counselor, adjusting approach), and what eventually worked — or what you learned when it did not. Principals want to see persistence and reflection, not perfection.

Q

How do you build relationships with families?

A

I contact families at the start of the year for a positive introduction before any issues arise. I communicate through the school's preferred channel (app, email, phone) and send home a weekly update. For concerns, I call rather than email to keep tone clear. I treat family members as partners, not audiences.

Q

What is your classroom management philosophy?

A

I build community first: clear expectations co-created with students, consistent routines, and a physical setup that minimizes downtime and transitions. I invest heavily in the first month to establish norms. I believe students misbehave when they feel disconnected, confused, or unchallenged — so I address root causes before consequences.
